Psychological Assessments - Frequently Asked Questions

At Austin Child Guidance Center (ACGC), we understand that seeking a psychological assessment for your child can raise many questions. Below, we've compiled answers to some of the most frequently asked questions to help guide you through the process.

General Information

What is a psychological assessment?

A psychological assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to identify cognitive, emotional, and behavioral concerns in children and adolescents. The process typically includes clinical interviews, standardized testing, and gathering information from parents, teachers, or other relevant sources.

What conditions do you assess for?

We conduct evaluations for concerns related to:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Anxiety and Mood Disorders
  • Behavioral and Emotional Challenges

Please note that we do not conduct evaluations for disability determinations, legal cases, gifted and talented determination, or custody-related matters.

How long does the assessment process take?

The assessment process involves several steps:

  1. Developmental Questionnaire: Before scheduling, you'll complete a questionnaire to provide background information about your child.
  2. Parent Interview: An initial interview with caregivers to discuss concerns and developmental history.
  3. Testing Sessions: One to two sessions where your child will complete standardized assessments.
  4. Feedback Session: A meeting typically scheduled to review the written report - approximately 6-8 weeks after testing

The entire process, from the initial interview to testing, typically spans from 2 to 3 weeks. From initial interview to diagnosis typically spans 6 to 8 weeks.

Eligibility & Referrals

Who can refer my child for an assessment?

We accept referrals exclusively from licensed physicians, such as pediatricians or primary care providers. Self-referrals are not accepted.

Do you accept all referrals?

While we strive to assist as many children as possible, we are unable to evaluate children who:

  • Have active eating disorders
  • Have had recent inpatient psychiatric hospitalizations
  • Have open Child Protective Services (CPS) cases
  • Are experiencing an active crisis requiring immediate intervention
  • Have a history of recent suicide attempts
  • Are currently engaged in substance use that may interfere with the evaluation process

Do both parents need to give permission for the assessment?

Yes. If both parents have legal rights regarding medical decisions, we require written consent from both parents before proceeding with the evaluation.

The Assessment Process

What should I expect during the evaluation?

The assessment process includes:

1. Developmental Questionnaire: Providing background information about your child's development and current concerns.

2. Parent Interview: Discussing your child's history, behaviors, and the goals for the assessment.

3. Testing Sessions: Your child will participate in standardized tests to evaluate various aspects of functioning.

4. Feedback Session: Reviewing the assessment findings and discussing recommendations. This virtual meeting is typically done within 6 to 8 weeks.

Will my child receive a diagnosis?

If appropriate, the assessment may result in a diagnosis that helps guide treatment and support services. However, a diagnosis is not always necessary or the primary goal of the evaluation.

What happens after the assessment is completed?

Approximately 6 to 8 weeks after the testing sessions, a feedback session will be scheduled to discuss the findings and provide recommendations. You will also receive a comprehensive written report detailing the evaluation results.
